Airport International Group achieves ISO 50001 certification at Queen Alia Airport

AMMAN, Jordan – March 1, 2026 – Airport International Group announced ISO 50001:2018 certification for Queen Alia International Airport, becoming the first Middle East airport to earn this energy management standard. The certification, awarded by Bureau Veritas, promotes systematic energy monitoring and reduction to boost efficiency and sustainability. AIG also renewed four ISO standards: 9001, 14001, 45001, and 10002.

Announcement Specifics

Queen Alia International Airport secured ISO 50001 certification, which provides a framework for data-driven energy management to cut consumption and support environmental goals. The airport operates a solar farm, electrified vehicles, and holds Level 4+ Airport Carbon Accreditation through 2028. The certification addresses energy management amid growing traffic volumes—QAIA handled 8.8 million passengers in 2024.

Stakeholder Perspective

“This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to operational excellence, sustainability, and responsible growth. Achieving ISO 50001, alongside the renewal of our integrated ISO standards, demonstrates how a robust management framework can drive efficiency, resilience, and long-term value for our stakeholders. We are proud to lead the region in energy management and to continue setting higher benchmarks for the aviation sector.”

— Nicolas Deviller, CEO at Airport International Group

Why it matters: The statement positions AIG as a regional sustainability leader amid rising aviation emissions pressures.

Industry Context

Aviation faces global demands for greener operations as the sector addresses greenhouse gas emissions. ISO 50001 helps organizations reduce energy costs and environmental impact systematically through continuous monitoring and improvement frameworks.

In MENA, where airports handle expanding traffic and regional governments pursue net-zero ambitions, AIG’s certification establishes a replicable model for peers in Dubai, Riyadh, and other major hubs. The first-mover status could accelerate regional adoption of international energy management standards, potentially lowering operational costs through energy savings and signaling investor confidence in sustainable infrastructure development.

Conclusion

AIG plans to build on the certification with continuous improvements, reinforcing its role in sustainable aviation operations and setting benchmarks that could inspire MENA airports to prioritize energy efficiency in their operational frameworks.
